Chapter 26 - THE JUDGMENT

The jury convicted Lucinda on the central forgery and fraud-related counts supported by the evidence.

Not every count.

One broader theft count was reduced because some funds remained in recoverable reserves and some expenses had legitimate components.

Good.

The judgment was not required to satisfy my anger.

It had to fit proof.

The court found:

Lucinda deliberately created false paternity documentation.

She used false legal correspondence to keep Adeline and me from communicating directly.

She redirected support through an account she controlled.

She knowingly withheld substantial funds while representing to me that support administration continued.

She used portions for unrelated purposes.

She conditioned Adeline’s payments on abandoning paternity efforts.

She maintained the deception for years.

The court did not find she intended physical harm to the twins.

The restaurant incident was treated separately as lower-level conduct.

Then sentencing.

Lucinda was sixty-six.

No prior conviction.

Significant premeditation.

Five-year duration.

Financial restitution already partially underway.

She had eventually admitted central facts.

The judge imposed a custodial sentence measured in years but not decades, with part suspended subject to probation, restitution and financial-control restrictions.

No theatrical empire collapse.

No life sentence.

Real incarceration.

Appeal rights remained.

Civil no-contact terms with Adeline and boys stayed in effect.

Any future contact would require lawful review and, practically, Adeline’s consent while the boys remained young.

Then me.

My assault diversion closed after completion.

Anger program.

Restitution.

No conviction.

No special exemption for being a father who discovered a terrible truth.

Then support.

The family court finalized:

Legal paternity.

Structured parenting plan.

I had regular daytime parenting time expanding gradually.

No immediate equal custody.

Why?

Five years of absence.

Children’s attachment to Adeline.

Need for transition.

Then overnights later if adjustment remained healthy.

I accepted.

Could I have fought for more immediately?

Yes.

Money buys litigation.

I chose not to.

That was one of the first times power felt like the ability not to use power.

Then surnames.

The boys remained:

Milo Cross.

Felix Cross.

No forced Ventresca.

If they wanted to discuss names later, later.

Good.

Then my mother’s family office role.

Permanently ended.

Independent professional administrator replaced the matriarch structure for personal support programs.

No private routing accounts without named beneficiaries and direct statements.

Recipients received monthly confirmations.

No “family discretion” hidden from both sides.

Boring controls.

Necessary.

Then the old restaurant.

I banned Lucinda? She was incarcerated. No need.

I changed nothing about the sign.

Nothing about the menu.

But one policy changed.

No family member could order staff to refuse food or service to another guest without management reason.

It sounded absurd written down.

Apparently some absurd rules exist because someone once abused an unwritten hierarchy.
