Chapter 20 - MILO’S SCHOOL CONCERT

Milo had a spring concert.

Twenty-three kindergarteners singing off-key about weather.

I received an invitation.

Adeline wrote:

You can come. Sit in back. No security inside.

I came.

Sat in back.

Marco outside.

No dark-suited line.

No front-row display.

Felix sat beside Adeline because his class performed the next week.

Milo spotted me halfway through.

He smiled.

Lost his place.

Then recovered.

Afterward, parents crowded the hallway.

Milo ran toward me.

I crouched.

He hugged me.

First time.

I froze for half a second.

Then hugged him back.

Not hard.

“Did you hear?”

“All of it.”

“I was loud.”

“You were.”

Then Felix said:

“My concert has dinosaurs.”

“Better.”

Milo punched his arm lightly.

Adeline corrected:

“Hands.”

Milo stopped.

I did not add anything.

Then another father asked Adeline:

“Is this their dad?”

She looked at me.

“Yes.”

Simple.

No explanation.

I had never heard a word mean so much.

Then she said:

“Biological father.”

There.

Boundary.

Also fair.

We were not yet a family unit.

We were building co-parenting from ruins.

Not pretending the divorce vanished.
