Chapter 12 - THE BOYS’ FIRST NIGHT AT MY HOUSE

It happened accidentally.

Not a custody transfer.

Adeline’s apartment building had a burst pipe.

Water damage in two units.

Her unit needed emergency drying.

Hotel available through renter’s insurance, but Milo developed a fever that afternoon.

Not serious.

Adeline did not want to move them through a hotel lobby late at night.

She called me.

I almost interpreted the call as trust.

Then stopped.

It was logistics.

“Can we use your guest house for one night?”

“Yes.”

No conditions.

The guest house sat on the edge of the estate.

Separate entrance.

Adeline and boys together.

I did not move them into my main residence.

Did not tell staff:

My sons are home.

Too much.

I stocked the refrigerator.

Then Claire warned:

“Do not overdo it.”

I had already ordered enough food for twelve people.

I canceled half.

Progress.

When they arrived, Felix stared at the gates.

“Is this a castle?”

“No.”

Milo:

“It has guards.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

I looked at Adeline.

She shrugged.

Answer.

“Because some people know I have money, and security helps keep the property private.”

No Mafia bedtime story.

Then Milo:

“Do they have guns?”

I chose honesty.

“Some security professionals are licensed to carry them.”

Adeline looked at me.

Good.

No lying.

Then:

“You don’t touch any weapon ever.”

Both boys nodded.

Clear.

Milo’s fever was 100.8.

Children’s medicine.

Water.

Rest.

No private physician summoned at midnight like a royal child.

Adeline handled it.

I stayed in my house.

At 2:00 a.m., my phone rang.

Adeline.

My heart jumped.

“Milo okay?”

“Yes. Felix is scared.”

“Of what?”

“The thunder.”

I looked outside.

Storm.

Then:

“He wants to know if you have a flashlight.”

I laughed.

“I have flashlights.”

I walked one over.

No bodyguards.

Rain.

Felix opened the door.

“You came.”

“You asked.”

That sentence seemed to matter.

He took the flashlight.

“Can keep?”

“Yes.”

Adeline raised one eyebrow.

“It costs twelve dollars.”

“Fine.”

No empire transferred.

One flashlight.

Then Milo called from the couch:

“Dad?”

First time.

Not Rocco.

Dad.

I stopped.

He looked half asleep.

“Can you shut door?”

That was all.

I shut it.

Walked back through rain.

I did not tell anyone what he called me.

Some moments become smaller when you announce them.
