Chapter 26 - ELARA BECOMES A MOTHER

Elara had a daughter at thirty-three.
Mae.
I was in the waiting room.
Not delivery room.
Her choice.
Callan paced.
I said:
“You are making everyone nervous.”
“I am everyone.”
When Elara texted:
Mom, come in.
I went.
Mae slept against her chest.
I did not reach.
Elara smiled.
“You can hold her.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
Permission.
Simple.
Later Callan entered.
He asked too.
Elara laughed.
“You both are ridiculous.”
“Trauma-informed grandparents.”
She rolled her eyes.
Mae woke.
Tiny.
Warm.
No trust notice mattered.
No governance packet entered that room.
Those came later through email.
Properly.
Directly.
Boring.
Perfect.
Elara looked at me.
“Did Sabina ever hold me?”
“Not as a newborn.”
“Do you regret that?”
I thought.
“No.”
“Even after she changed?”
“Changing later doesn’t make an earlier boundary wrong.”
Elara nodded.
Good.
Then:
“Will she meet Mae?”
Sabina was ninety-two.
Still alive.
“Your choice.”
Elara arranged one short visit months later.
Sabina held Mae only after asking.
That detail mattered.
She whispered:
“May I?”
May you like
Elara said yes.
A question Sabina should have learned decades earlier.
