Chapter 19 - ELARA ASKS ABOUT GRANDMA

Elara was seven when she asked:

“Why don’t I see Grandma Sabina?”

We had prepared.

No lies.

No litigation dump.

“Before you were born, Grandma hurt me.”

“How?”

“She pushed me and I fell.”

Elara’s eyes widened.

“While me inside?”

“Yes.”

“Did I get hurt?”

“No.”

“Did you?”

“A little.”

“Why?”

I looked at Callan.

He answered.

“Grandma wanted Mom and me to make choices about money and family that we did not want to make.”

Elara frowned.

“Why push?”

“Because she was angry and wanted control.”

“Did you stop her?”

“I came in after.”

“Then?”

I raised one eyebrow.

Callan groaned.

“I threw a cake.”

Elara stared.

“What kind?”

I laughed.

He covered his face.

“That is not the important part.”

“What kind?”

“Vanilla.”

“Waste.”

“Yes.”

Children destroy drama efficiently.

Then:

“Can I see Grandma?”

Not yet.

We discussed with therapist.

At nine, one supervised video call.

Sabina older.

Quieter.

No pearl armor.

First thing:

“You look like your mother.”

Elara answered:

“I look like me.”

I nearly applauded.

Sabina smiled.

“Yes.”

Good start.

No pressure.

No request for forgiveness.

Call ended after fifteen minutes.

Later:

“Do I have to call again?”

“No.”

May you like

“Maybe birthday.”

Her choice.
