Chapter 15 - GRAHAM’S LETTER ABOUT SABINA

Graham’s letter did not call Sabina evil.

I was glad.

People are more frightening when their humanity remains intact.

He wrote:

Sabina saved Harbor Crest twice when I was too sick to admit weakness.

She negotiated debt.

Kept lenders calm.

Protected employees.

She earned my trust.

Then:

She also began to believe being essential made her entitled to remain essential.

There.

That was Sabina.

Not greed alone.

Identity.

Graham continued:

If I die first, she will experience any reduction in authority as abandonment.

Do not soothe that by giving her authority she no longer needs.

Callan cried.

Mara cried.

I sat quietly.

Then one line for the children:

You are not responsible for making your mother feel necessary.

That sentence changed Callan more than court.

He had spent his life doing exactly that.

Callan later visited Sabina in custody.

Not with me.

Not with Elara.

His choice.

He told me after.

First question:

“Did you really think Jessamine was only a womb?”

Sabina cried.

“I was angry.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“No.”

He waited.

Finally:

“I thought once the baby came, Jessamine would become the person most capable of taking you away from me.”

Callan frowned.

“She was already my wife.”

“I know.”

“Then why Elara?”

“Because before a child, marriages can feel temporary.”

Ugly.

Honest.

“After?”

“She becomes your family in a way I cannot undo.”

Callan sat back.

“You thought my wife wasn’t family until she gave birth?”

Sabina looked down.

“Yes.”

Then:

“And the trust?”

“I knew your branch would leave me.”

“It wasn’t yours.”

“I know that now.”

“No. You knew it then.”

Silence.

That distinction mattered.

Sabina had not misunderstood the law.

She had rejected it emotionally.

Callan asked:

“Did money matter?”

“Yes.”

“More than Elara?”

“No.”

“More than Jessamine?”

Sabina did not answer.

That was answer enough.

Meeting ended.

No hug.

No forgiveness declaration.

Callan continued limited letters later.

No business.

May you like

No baby.

Boundaries.
