Chapter 17 - CALLAN READS EVERYTHING

Callan became unbearable about paperwork.
School forms.
Insurance.
Mortgage.
Nanny contracts.
He read everything.
Twice.
When Elara started preschool, he questioned the photo-release clause for twenty minutes.
I finally said:
“Your father has possessed you.”
He smiled.
“Section Nine.”
“Stop.”
But his overcorrection softened over time.
The real change was not reading.
It was speaking.
When Mara asked whether we would attend a family holiday where Sabina might be present after release, Callan said:
“No.”
No explanation.
When an aunt said:
“But she’s your mother.”
Callan answered:
“Yes.”
Still no.
When a family trustee tried to schedule a meeting during Elara’s recital:
“Reschedule.”
No guilt.
No dynasty emergency.
That was new.
His relationship with his mother did not disappear.
It became smaller.
Phone calls after probation terms allowed.
Occasional supervised family events when I was not present and Elara remained away.
Later, years later, Elara could choose.
Not yet.
Then Harbor Crest invited Callan back.
Senior advisory role.
He declined the first offer.
Accepted a board seat six years later after independent nomination.
No family-governance authority.
No chair.

He read every page.
Of course.
