Chapter 7 - Pierce Moves Home
After two weeks, CPS reassessed.
Pierce had:
Disclosed texts.
Completed intake.
No contact with Lenora.
Accepted responsibility.
No evidence he personally forced Cade into water.
Cade wanted him home.
Bethany recommended return with conditions.
Not legal prohibition.
Safety plan.
Pierce moved back.
Guest room initially.
Our marriage not repaired.
Parenting partnership resumed.
Rules:
No Lenora access.
No family-led water exposure.
No discussing legal case with Cade.
Pierce handles bedtime twice weekly, mornings, school pickups—not as punishment or performance, but because he had allowed work to dominate.
Then one night Cade woke from a nightmare.
“Wave.”
Pierce went first.
I stayed in doorway.
Cade reached for me.
Pierce did not take offense.
“Want Mom?”
“Yes.”
He moved.
That mattered.
Old Pierce might have felt rejected.
This Pierce let need be need.
Then next morning:
“Dad make toast.”
Cade chose him.
Attachment can recover through ordinary choices.
Our marriage counselor, Dr. Rina Patel, asked me:
“Do you believe Pierce loves Cade?”
“Yes.”
“Do you believe he endangered him?”
“Yes.”
“Do those conflict?”
“No.”
That was progress.
Pierce asked:
“Do you believe I knew Mom would take off vest?”
“I believe you had enough information to know something could happen that I would not approve.”
He flinched.
Not same accusation.
More accurate.
Then:
“Do you trust me?”
“No.”
He looked down.
“Will you?”
“I don’t know.”
