Chapter 15 - The Marriage Almost Ends

I packed a suitcase once.

Not after beach.

Three months later.

Why?

Pierce lied about speaking to Lenora.

Not conversation.

A voicemail.

She left one through an unblocked work number.

He listened.

Did not tell me for two days.

When I saw it in his call log during unrelated phone search, everything returned.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I didn’t call back.”

“That’s not answer.”

“She sounded terrible.”

“So?”

“I felt guilty.”

“And hid it.”

“Yes.”

I opened closet.

Pulled suitcase.

Pierce went pale.

“Adair.”

“This is exactly the problem.”

“I didn’t protect her.”

“You protected yourself from my reaction.”

He stopped.

Same pattern.

Then:

“You get one more secret because you’re ashamed and I am done.”

He sat on bed.

No argument.

“Okay.”

That made me angrier.

“What does okay mean?”

“If you leave, I understand.”

I stared.

Then he said:

“But I don’t want you to.”

Good.

Not manipulation.

We went to emergency counseling appointment next day.

I did not leave.

Not because one session.

Because Pierce handed me his work phone and said:

“I need a system until trust returns.”

I did not want surveillance.

We created transparency rule:

Any direct contact from Lenora disclosed same day.

Not permanent.

Six months.

Then end.

He complied.

Trust rebuilt through boring consistency.

Not passwords forever.
