Chapter 23 - DIANA’S TRIAL BEGINS WITH A TRAY

Diana chose a bench trial after rejecting the plea language.

The video played.

My cake.

The tray.

Her movement.

My body losing balance.

Dishes.

My knee.

Lucio entering.

No audio from the dining-room camera.

The nearby council-room microphone captured the crash and fragments of speech.

Witnesses supplied the rest.

Two servers heard:

“Pregnant or not, wives serve this family.”

Both independently.

I testified.

“What happened immediately before the tray?”

“I told Diana I believed Nathan had lied about Maren and I intended to leave the party.”

“Did she want you to leave?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“She said I would humiliate him.”

“Did she know Nathan was meeting Maren upstairs?”

“I learned later that she did.”

Defense objected to my knowledge basis.

Sustained where appropriate.

Good.

Evidence belonged where it belonged.

Then defense asked:

“Did Diana strike your body with her fist?”

“No.”

“Kick you?”

“No.”

“Hit your abdomen?”

“No.”

“Did you fall down stairs?”

“No.”

“Did the baby suffer injury?”

“No.”

“Then why call this violence?”

I looked at the attorney.

“Because she deliberately shoved a heavy tray into a pregnant woman after that woman refused to obey her.”

No inflation.

No apology.
