Chapter 13 - LUCIO CANNOT BUY MY RECOVERY

Lucio offered me a townhouse.

“No.”

“A driver.”

“Sometimes.”

“A full security detail.”

“No.”

“A second attorney.”

“I have one.”

“A private obstetric nurse.”

“My doctor did not prescribe one.”

He stared.

“You are enjoying this.”

“A little.”

My brother solved problems through resources.

Money.

People.

Doors.

He loved me.

He also confused love with infrastructure.

One afternoon I came home to find a new lock system being installed at my condo.

I had not ordered it.

I called him.

“Remove it.”

“It’s better.”

“Remove it.”

“Elise.”

“My door.”

“The existing lock is cheap.”

“My cheap lock.”

Silence.

Then:

“I’ll pay for the hole.”

“You will pay to restore the original hardware.”

He did.

Later he apologized.

No speech.

A text:

I was wrong to authorize work at your home without asking.

I saved it.

Not because I needed evidence.

Because Lucio admitting a boundary violation in writing deserved historical preservation.
