Chapter 10 - THE AFFAIR WAS FIVE MONTHS OLD
Nathan did not kiss Maren once in an elevator.
The affair began five months before my birthday.
I learned through a combination of messages Nathan eventually produced in discovery, hotel billing records related to marital spending, Maren’s own preserved communications, and admissions.
No hacking.
No magical recovery.
No one secret screenshot proving a year.
A pattern.
First month:
Flirting.
Lunches after client meetings.
Second:
First kiss.
Not the elevator.
The elevator was their second.
Third:
Hotel room at the Halcyon.
Fourth:
Two more meetings.
One overnight while Nathan told me he had an early investor breakfast.
Fifth:
He told Maren he was ending it after I found the message.
Then resumed contact eight days later.
Why?
Maren asked whether he had told me the full truth.
He wrote:
Not yet. Elise is seven months pregnant. I cannot blow up her life now.
As though the affair belonged to weather.
Maren:
Then stop coming back.
Nathan:
I’m trying.
Trying.
That word carried astonishing flexibility.
The hotel room attached to my birthday receipt was from the previous night.
Nathan and Maren had stayed there until after midnight.
The birthday meeting in Suite Two was supposed to be their final conversation.
Maren had become furious when Nathan stopped answering that morning.
She threatened to tell me herself.
Diana learned.
Diana arranged the side entrance.
Diana gave Nathan a keycard.
Diana kept me downstairs.
Diana did not create the affair.
She did not choose Maren.
She did not ask Nathan to kiss her upstairs.
Her role was concealment.
Why?
Because she believed disclosure before the baby’s birth would destroy the marriage.
Her plan was simple:
Nathan ends it.
Nobody tells Elise more.
Baby is born.
Months pass.
The affair becomes:
something that ended.
Then perhaps, according to Diana later:
“Truth could be handled when Elise was physically stronger.”
That sentence enraged me more than the tray.
My pregnancy had become their excuse to deny me information about my own marriage.
Nathan said he hid the affair to protect me.
Diana said she hid it to protect my baby.
Both had removed the same person from the decision.
