Chapter 8 - ADAM’S LAST EMAIL
Naomi obtained Adam’s email archive from the family office by court order.
One message was sent four days before his death.
To Walter Keene.
Subject:
REMOVE MOM.
My chest tightened.
Walter,
After the conversation tonight, I want to proceed with removing Margaret as occupancy administrator before Emily’s sixth-year certification.
She is still treating the house as personal property and has now discussed selling with Beth despite restrictions.
Do not tell Rachel yet. She is already overwhelmed with work and I want documents ready before I bring her into another family fight.
I stopped.

Adam had done it too.
Protection through omission.
I wanted to scream at him.
Naomi said nothing.
The email continued.
If anything happens to me before we finish this, contact Rachel directly. Do not let Mom convince her she is a guest.
My eyes blurred.
Anything happens.
Not prophecy.
Ordinary estate caution.
Walter replied:
Understood. I will prepare substitution paperwork. For clarity, your death would alter the occupancy chain automatically under Section 8. Rachel would need independent counsel.
Then Adam died.
Four days later.
Highway collision.
What did Walter do?
He contacted Margaret first.
Why?
He represented the trust.
Margaret was current administrator.
He told her Adam died.
Asked to schedule transition meeting.
Margaret said Rachel was medically and emotionally unable to discuss estate matters.
Was that true?
I barely functioned.
Walter accepted postponement for thirty days.
Then sixty.
Then Margaret claimed I requested no contact.
I never did.
Did Walter verify directly?
No.
Failure.
Not conspiracy.
He later emailed me once.
Subject:
Carter Homestead matters.
It went to spam.
I never saw it.
Then he relied on Margaret again.
System built on intermediaries.
By the time Walter became suspicious, months had passed.
Why did he not force issue?
No legal deadline until Emily’s sixth-year certification.
He thought there was time.
Everyone thinks there is time.
Adam.
Walter.
Me.
Then property offer accelerated everything.
Walter testified later that Margaret asked:
“If Rachel voluntarily leaves, does Section 8 still give her occupancy authority?”
He refused to answer hypothetically without counsel.
She asked:
“What if Emily remains?”
He told her:
“Do not manipulate residence to change trust rights.”
Direct warning.
She knew.
Then another Adam email:
Mom says Rachel is not family enough to administer Carter House. I told her if she says that in front of Emily again, we leave.
I never heard that conversation.
Adam protected me from it.
Or hid it.
Both.
At home that night, I told Emily about her father.
Not trust.
Not house.
“Dad stood up for you before he died.”
“How?”
“He told Grandma not to say you didn’t belong.”
“She said anyway.”
“Yes.”
“Then Daddy didn’t win.”
Children.
“No.”
“Is that sad?”
“Yes.”
She put her head on my shoulder.
“We can win now.”
I almost corrected the word.
Then did.
“We can make things safer now.”
