Chapter 25 - THE LAUNDRY ROOM BECOMES SOMETHING ELSE

The advocacy center asked what to do with the old laundry room.

They knew the history from trust litigation records.

They proposed a small exhibit about conditional housing and child coercion.

Emily said no.

Not because ashamed.

Because:

“I don’t want strangers standing where I cried and calling it education.”

Good.

Instead the room became ordinary staff laundry and supply space.

No plaque.

No photograph.

No quote.

The center’s training materials discussed the case anonymously with Emily’s permission:

five-year-old required to earn “shelter credits.”

No names.

The room itself remained a room.

I loved that more.

The old cot had been gone for decades.

New washers.

Shelves.

Detergent.

May you like

Nothing sacred.

Nothing cursed.
