Chapter 26 - EMILY’S DAUGHTER

Emily had a daughter at thirty-one.

Sophie.

I became Grandma Rachel.

Terrifying title.

I watched myself carefully.

The first time Sophie threw peas, I said:

“No dessert if—”

Stopped.

Conditional food discipline.

Not necessarily abuse.

Still, I corrected.

“Peas stay on plate.”

Emily noticed.

“You can give normal consequences.”

“I know.”

“You’re weird.”

“Yes.”

Grandparenting after family abuse creates hypervigilance too.

We learned proportion.

At five, Sophie helped Emily fold towels.

I froze for half a second.

Sophie shouted:

“I get two dollars!”

I laughed.

“What are you buying?”

“Stickers.”

May you like

“Excellent economics.”

No shelter.
