Chapter 19 - THE HOUSE RULES

Our new house rules fit on one page.
Not laminated.
Not a trust.
Just family.
Everyone who lives here gets food, water, a bed, warmth, and safety without earning them.
Chores help the household; chores never purchase belonging.
Adults do not ask children to keep secrets about safety.
Closed doors are allowed for privacy, never punishment.
Nobody uses “real Carter” or “half Carter.”
If someone wants to leave a room, they may unless immediate safety requires otherwise.
Questions are not disrespect.
Emily helped write one.
NO MAKING KIDS FOLD FITTED SHEETS.
I accepted.
No one should fold fitted sheets.
At nine, she asked for allowance.
We made chores.
Feed dog.
Clear plate.
Optional paid jobs.
Wash car.
Help organize garage.
Laundry?
She refused.
Fine.
At eleven she chose to learn because soccer uniforms needed washing.
First time she carried a full basket down the hall, I noticed my breathing change.
She noticed too.
“Mom.”
“What?”
“It’s clothes.”
“I know.”
“Want me to put it down?”
“No.”
Actually.
No.
She carried it.
No one laughed.
No one pointed outside.

No shelter credits.
