Chapter 21 - RACHEL CARTER, HOUSEHOLD STEWARD

At forty, I resigned as Household Steward.

Not from motherhood.

From trust administration.

Emily was seventeen.

Samuel’s successor asked:

“Why?”

“I hate property governance.”

“You’ve done it twelve years.”

“Exactly.”

The trust allowed independent steward once surviving parent voluntarily stepped aside without affecting Emily’s occupancy.

I chose professional management.

No family crisis.

No accusation.

The house remained ours to live in.

I still chose paint colors.

Mostly.

Emily overruled me on kitchen cabinets.

Family authority should survive some things.

Trust governance went to professionals.

My life got smaller in the best way.

Clinic.

Friends.

Emily.

A man named James Walker entered later.

Teacher.

Widower.

We dated three years before marriage.

No trust role.

Prenup.

Separate counsel.

James joked:

“Do I inherit fitted-sheet prohibition?”

“Yes.”

“Deal.”

Margaret was not invited to wedding.

Emily’s choice mattered but mine too.

Beth attended.

Her sons danced badly.

No family performance of total reconciliation.

We had enough.
