Celeste Marlow.
I had not attended.
Was it illegal for her to ask?
No.
Was it strange before marriage?
Not necessarily.
Stepparents often explore future options.
Rachel agreed to speak only after proper waivers and within what professional rules allowed.
Her contemporaneous follow-up email to Celeste said:
As discussed, any future stepparent adoption would require Alessio’s informed consent and court approval. Adoption should not be presented to Eva as replacement of her deceased mother. The court’s focus will be the child’s best interests, not symbolic erasure of prior family identity.
That language was unusually direct.
Why?
Because Celeste had asked:
“If adoption happens, is it better for the child to have one maternal identity?”
Rachel answered:
“That is a therapeutic question, not a legal requirement.”
Then:
“Would old photographs complicate adjustment?”
The lawyer said:
“No legal reason to remove them.”
Celeste had already been told.
The law did not require erasure.
Therapy did not require erasure.
So what did?
Her own fear.
