The ring created a smaller legal dispute than my family expected.
Celeste’s attorney requested its return.
My attorney said engagement rings are often treated as conditional gifts depending jurisdiction, circumstances, and who ended the engagement.
The central stone had belonged to my mother.

Return the new setting to Celeste if she wanted reimbursement value, retain the family stone, or sell the entire ring and divide value according to a negotiated formula if law remained disputed.
Celeste chose cash value for the setting.
The center stone returned to my family jewelry vault.
No dramatic melting.
No throwing it into a river.
