Chapter 26 - THE HOUSE NATALIE FINALLY BOUGHT

Natalie was sixty-five when she sold the first house she ever bought with entirely clean money.

Not the failed $1.36 million mansion.

A four-bedroom brick house she had lived in for nineteen years.

She invited me over before closing.

Empty rooms.

Boxes.

Dust marks where furniture used to sit.

She stood in the kitchen.

“Do you remember Dad saying you had to give me everything because I needed a house?”

“Yes.”

“I didn’t need one.”

“I know.”

“I needed him to keep choosing me.”

That was painfully honest.

She looked around.

“This house was the first thing I bought after I stopped asking whether he approved.”

I smiled.

“So naturally you’re selling it.”

“Character growth.”

We laughed.

She was moving into a condo closer to Megan and Sophie.

Not because our family became perfectly fused again.

Because proximity became safe enough to be ordinary.

Before we left, Natalie handed me a box.

Inside was a copy of Evelyn Miller’s original descendant letter.

She had kept it.

The line:

Natalie is not more entitled because she pleases you. Rachel is not less entitled because she resists you.

Natalie touched the paper.

“I hated her for that.”

“Grandma?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought she loved you more.”

“She barely liked anyone.”

Natalie laughed.

True.

“What do we do with it?”

“Archive.”

“No dramatic burning?”

“No.”

“Look at us.”

Growth indeed.
