Chapter 18 - ELAINE

Elaine’s relationship with us took longer than Richard’s in one way and shorter in another.

She admitted more quickly.

But I trusted her less emotionally.

She had spent my entire childhood translating Richard’s demands into love.

Your father worries.

Your father provides.

Your father knows how the world works.

At Megan’s mediated meeting with her at nineteen, Elaine said:

“I slapped you because I thought you were interfering.”

Megan asked:

“With what?”

“An adult financial argument.”

“I was helping my brother.”

“Yes.”

“Would you do it now?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Elaine cried.

“Because I finally understand that I had trained myself to protect Richard’s authority before I protected children.”

Megan nodded.

That was enough for one meeting.

Tyler never met her again.

I met Elaine twice before her death years later.

No reconciliation fantasy.

Coffee.

Boundaries.

She asked once:

“Did I ruin your childhood?”

“No.”

She looked relieved too quickly.

I continued.

“You made parts of it unsafe. You also loved us. Both are true.”

Relief disappeared.

Good.

Truth should not always comfort.

Elaine died at eighty-three after a stroke.

No mystery.

No secret poisoning.

No dramatic inheritance reveal.

Her estate paid outstanding restitution first.

Then distributed lawful assets.

She left me her wedding ring.

I declined.

Natalie kept it.

That felt right.
