Chapter 23 - MEGAN’S CAREER

Megan became a civil engineer.

Not a trust lawyer.

Not an accountant.

Not a therapist.

She liked bridges.

Actual bridges.

People kept trying to make that symbolic.

She hated it.

“It’s concrete, Mom.”

“Concrete can still be symbolic.”

“Blocked.”

She worked on public transit and pedestrian infrastructure.

Used lawful trust distributions for graduate school.

Earned her salary.

Bought an ordinary house with her wife, Lauren.

No Miller company.

No family board.

At thirty, she became a mother through adoption.

A daughter named Sophie.

The first time Sophie met Natalie, she called her “Aunt Nat.”

Natalie cried in the bathroom.

Pretended allergies.

Nobody believed her.

Megan taught Sophie the simplest family rule:

People can ask.

You can say no.

Family still has to stop.

That came from everything.

Not only the slap.

One Christmas Sophie grabbed a toy from another child.

Megan made her return it.

Sophie screamed:

“But we’re family!”

Megan looked at me.

May you like

I laughed.

Generational work never ends.
