Chapter 25 - RICHARD’S DEATH

Richard died at eighty-six from heart failure.
No mystery.
No final confession hidden behind wallpaper.
No murder.
No sequel twist.
His executor called me.
Richard left:
Company shares.
Investments.
Personal property.
Most divided between Natalie and me subject to restitution and estate obligations.
I accepted the lawful inheritance into a managed account.
Some people expected me to reject it.
Why?
Money does not carry fingerprints after law settles ownership.
I donated a portion to a child legal-aid organization.
Kept the rest.
Paid taxes.
Helped Sophie’s education account later.
No purity theater.
Richard left Tyler his watch.
Tyler declined.
It went to Natalie.
He left Megan a handwritten letter.
She read it.
It said:
You ran toward your brother when every adult at the table was failing him. I punished that courage. I am sorry.
Megan cried.
Kept the letter.
Not because it erased the slap.
Because it finally named what she had done correctly.
Richard left me nothing sentimental.
Only a note:
You were right to leave.
Four words.
Enough.
I put it in a drawer.

Years later, I threw it away.
Paper became paper.
