Chapter 21 - NATALIE BECOMES AN AUNT AGAIN

Tyler was seventeen when he asked if Natalie could come to his graduation.
I stared.
“Why?”
“She sends funny birthday cards.”
That was true.
For years, Natalie respected distance.
No surprise visits.
No gifts over boundaries.
No money.
Just cards.
Megan had resumed occasional lunches with her first.
Tyler later.
I was last.
“Do you want her there?”
“Yes.”
“Then invite her.”
Natalie came.
Sat in the middle rows.
No family VIP seating.
Afterward Tyler hugged her.
Her face collapsed.
She did not cling.
Good.
Later she told me:
“I used to think if your children loved me, it proved you were wrong about me.”
“And now?”
“I think they get to have their own relationship with me.”
Growth.
Not erasure.
Natalie never had children.
Her choice.
Eventually she bought a house.
Smaller than the one Richard nearly funded.
Mortgage.
Down payment from her earnings and lawful trust distribution after independent review.
She sent me the closing photo.
Keys in hand.

Apparently paperwork is real.
I replied:
Devastating discovery.
We were not best friends.

We became sisters again in a quieter form.
That was enough.
