Chapter 8 - THE OLD CLIPS

The investigation of Ryan’s phone did not give us every private file automatically.

Police reviewed material relevant to the alleged assault and motive under the warrant scope.

Through discovery, certain videos became available.

There were seven involving Natalie.

None showed crimes.

That was important.

Clip One:

Natalie asking to leave my father’s birthday dinner.

Clip Two:

Natalie saying no when Ryan asked if the family could visit our house the day after we returned from our honeymoon? No, years later. Better: after an obstetric appointment.

“Not Sunday. I need rest.”

Clip Three:

Natalie telling my father:

“Please call before coming over.”

Clip Four:

Natalie saying:

“No one is touching the nursery paint until Daniel and I choose it.”

Clip Five:

Natalie refusing to attend an out-of-town family weekend at six months pregnant.

Clip Six:

Natalie telling Ryan:

“Stop making jokes about my body.”

Clip Seven:

A kitchen argument where Natalie said:

“If Daniel wants to move, he can tell you himself.”

Each clip began late.

Ended early.

Context missing.

Ryan had organized them in an album called:

DAN — LOOK.

I felt sick.

Not because the clips made Natalie look monstrous.

They did not.

Because I recognized the argument.

Ryan had shown me two of them.

Maybe three.

At the time, he said:

“See how she talks?”

And I had answered:

“She’s tired.”

But I watched.

I allowed the premise that my brother had standing to collect evidence about my wife’s tone.

I never demanded the entire folder.

Never told my father to stop viewing it.

I treated it as annoying family gossip.

Natalie asked me:

“How many did you know about?”

“Two for sure.”

“Did you watch?”

“Yes.”

May you like

She nodded.

That hurt more than shouting would have.
