Chapter 7 - I SEND THE VIDEO

Police obtained a forensic copy of the recording after proper legal process.

Natalie and I eventually received a copy through counsel.

It showed more than I expected.

Timestamp.

Ryan placing the phone.

Walking into frame.

Natalie exiting the bathroom.

Ryan confronting her.

Natalie moving toward the stairs.

Ryan stepping behind her.

His hands extending.

Contact.

Shove.

Clear.

Then her fall left frame.

His voice:

“That baby doesn't make you special!”

It also captured my arrival at the bottom.

My father.

My punch.

Ryan’s threat.

Everything.

No angle hid my conduct.

Good.

Our attorney, Melissa Grant, said:

“Do not circulate this.”

I said:

“Everyone thinks Natalie tripped.”

“Then let the investigation correct it.”

“My father is telling people—”

“Daniel.”

I stopped.

She looked at Natalie.

“What do you want?”

Natalie said:

“I want the rumor stopped.”

“Do you want the video sent?”

She hesitated.

“Not yet.”

That should have ended it.

It did not.

That night, my aunt Karen posted in the extended-family group:

I hope everyone remembers there are two sides. Ryan is hurt too.

I saw red.

I uploaded the video.

Not to social media.

To the private family thread.

Forty-two members.

Including Lily.

Including teenage cousins.

Including my grandmother’s sister.

No warning.

No blur.

Natalie falling.

Ryan shoving.

Me punching.

The message:

THIS IS THE SIDE.

I pressed send.

Within three minutes, Natalie called from the bedroom.

“What did you do?”

I knew from her voice.

“I stopped the lie.”

“You sent me falling down stairs to forty people.”

“I sent what happened.”

“I told you not yet.”

“I—”

“You made my body evidence for the family.”

There.

I had turned protection into ownership.

Exactly the kind of thing I was furious at Ryan for doing.

I deleted the post.

Too late.

Several people had downloaded it.

One cousin forwarded it to her husband.

Someone sent a screenshot outside the family.

The next morning, a gossip account connected to local business circles posted:

MERCER FAMILY BRAWL AT GRADUATION PARTY.

No video.

Yet.

Our attorney moved quickly.

The source never posted full footage.

Still, Natalie’s privacy was gone wider than she wanted.

I apologized.

Not:

I’m sorry but they lied.

Just:

“I was wrong.”

She said:

May you like

“Yes.”

That mistake would follow me into court.
