Chapter 21 - THE FAMILY GROUP CHAT DIES

I deleted the extended-family group.
Not literally.
I left it.
So did Natalie.
Three cousins followed.
Then my aunt created:
MERCER FAMILY — NEW CHAT NO DRAMA.
Natalie saw the title and laughed until she cried.
“Do not join.”
“I wasn’t going to.”
My father joined.
Ryan’s mother? Our mother had died years earlier, so not relevant.
Dad later texted privately:
You could still be in family communication without discussing the case.
I replied:
People can call me.
This apparently shocked a generation trained to believe group chats were constitutional infrastructure.
Calls came.
Fewer.
Better.
My relationship with family stopped being ambient.
It became chosen.
