Chapter 24 - KATHERINE AND CLARA

Clara was twenty-one when she chose to meet Katherine as an adult.
I did not attend.
Her choice.
Afterward, she told me:
“She apologized.”
“For the shove?”
“Yes.”
“What did she say?”
“That she thought I represented everything she hated about you.”
My stomach tightened.
“That’s not an apology if it becomes my fault.”
“She said that too.”
“What?”
“She said turning me into a symbol was the problem.”
Better.
“Did you forgive her?”
“Not completely.”
“You don’t have to.”
“I know.”
Then Clara smiled.
“She also said the chair was ugly.”
