Chapter 21 - ELEANOR AND THE TABLECLOTH

Eleanor’s apology centered on the thing I remembered most.
The tablecloth.
“I was worried about water while Clara was on the floor.”
“Yes.”
“I keep replaying it.”
“Good.”
She looked hurt.
I did not soften.
“Guilt should do something useful.”
“What?”
“Change what you notice first.”
Years later, Clara spilled water at Eleanor’s apartment.
Eleanor stood.
Clara froze.
Then Eleanor said:
“Towels are under the sink.”
That was all.
Clara wiped it.
Eleanor did not look at me.

She did not need praise.
Change is sometimes best when no one claps.
