Chapter 26 - THE TABLE

The original banquet table survived.
Repairs cost an absurd amount.
Arthur insisted.
Years later, the training institute replaced it.
The old table went into storage.
Someone suggested auction.
Another suggested museum display.
THE TABLE THAT CHANGED THE VANCE FAMILY.
I vetoed that with every ounce of protector authority I still had.
“It was furniture.”
Matthew agreed.
The table sold anonymously through an estate dealer.
Proceeds went back to the trust.
No plaque.
No heroic story.
I kept one thing from that night.
Matthew’s little plate.
I found it in a box of items returned after the estate renovation.
White porcelain.
Tiny chip on edge.
I almost threw it away.
Then Matthew saw it.
“Is that the bread plate?”
“Yes.”
He stared.
“Why do you have it?”
“I don’t know.”
“Throw it out.”
So I did.
No ceremony.

Trash.
Some objects do not deserve transformation into symbols.
