Chapter 18 - CHLOE AND THE DOG

Chloe requested a supervised visit with Matthew.

Not legally required.

My choice as parent.

I asked Matthew.

“Do you want to see Aunt Chloe?”

“Dog?”

“Yes.”

He thought.

“Dog first.”

Fair.

We met in a park.

The French bulldog was older and fatter.

Matthew knelt carefully.

The dog licked his hand.

Chloe cried.

Matthew looked alarmed.

“Why?”

“I’m sorry.”

“For dog?”

“No.”

He did not understand.

Good.

She should not unload adult guilt.

I interrupted.

“Keep it simple.”

Chloe nodded.

“I was mean at dinner when you were little. I’m sorry.”

Matthew looked at her.

“You gave dog steak.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Chloe closed her eyes.

“I was trying to hurt your mom’s feelings.”

“Dog hungry?”

“Probably.”

Matthew accepted that more easily.

Then:

“Can I feed dog?”

Chloe handed him a dog treat.

Not steak.

He laughed.

The meeting lasted thirty minutes.

Later he asked:

“Is Aunt Chloe bad?”

I gave him the hated answer.

“People are more than one thing.”

He groaned.

“Mom.”

I laughed.

Over time, Chloe rebuilt limited contact.

She never regained a trust committee role automatically.

She completed governance training and later served on one subsidiary advisory board after independent selection.

Not because family forgave her.

Because she was qualified for that role.

Her economic interest remained.

We did not need exile as symbolism.

She also changed her dog-feeding habits, mostly because the veterinarian ordered it.

Some consequences are mundane.
