Chapter 24 - CLARA WITHOUT THE VANCES

For years, people called me Nathan Vance’s widow.

Then Matthew Vance’s mother.

Then the woman who overturned the Vance table.

I hated all three identities eventually.

I rebuilt my design business.

Commercial interiors.

Restaurants, ironically.

Not Vance properties at first.

I wanted separate work.

At thirty-seven, I opened my own firm.

No family capital.

A bank loan.

Savings.

One outside investor.

Normal risk.

The first year nearly failed.

Arthur, by then old and powerless, heard about it.

He sent no money.

Good.

He sent one note:

Cut fixed costs before cutting design quality.

Annoyingly useful.

I used the advice.

Never told him.

My firm survived.

Matthew grew.

I dated.

Loved once seriously.

Did not marry.

Not because Nathan remained sacred.

Because life did not require a replacement structure.

I learned to be Clara without a qualifying noun.

That was harder than any trust meeting.
