Chapter 22 - MATTHEW READS NATHAN’S LETTER

At eighteen, Matthew gained access to more of his trust records.
He read Nathan’s letter to me.
The one beginning:
If Dad has started talking about what I “left you,” assume he has already lied.
Matthew smiled.
“Dad dramatic.”
“Runs in the family.”
He read governance documents.
Reserve records.
Arthur’s emails.
My table incident.
Everything.
Then asked:
“Why didn’t Dad just tell everyone?”
“He tried.”
“Why use debt and covenants?”
“Because Arthur controlled voting.”
“That sounds exhausting.”
“Yes.”
He studied finance in college partly because he wanted to understand the structures that had shaped childhood.
I worried trauma chose his career.
He said:
“Maybe. Still my career.”
Fair.
He did not join Vance Hospitality immediately.
Worked at a logistics firm.
Then a restaurant technology startup.
No automatic family job.
At twenty-four, he joined the Vance board through normal nomination and conflict review.
One seat.
Not inheritance throne.
He held economic interests through trust.
Governance required qualification.
Nathan would have approved.

Probably.
