Chapter 20 - ARTHUR COMES HOME

Arthur completed the custodial portion of his sentence in his seventies.
He entered supervised release.
No fiduciary authority.
No company management.
He returned to the estate under a limited occupancy agreement.
By then Victoria had downsized voluntarily to a condominium closer to medical care.
Arthur lived in twenty thousand square feet mostly alone.
That irony belonged to life, not punishment.
He requested contact with Matthew.
Matthew was eleven.
He remembered the dinner vaguely.
Bread.
Dog.
Table falling.
He remembered Arthur more from stories afterward.
Therapists evaluated.
One supervised meeting.
Arthur looked older.
No luxury watch.
He wore one anyway? Perhaps a simple watch. He had always loved watches.
Matthew sat across from him.
Arthur said:
“I’m sorry I treated you as though food could be used to make your mother obey.”
Direct.
Good.
Matthew asked:
“Did you steal my money?”
Arthur answered carefully.
“I used money from your trust when I did not have the right approvals, and I delayed paying it back.”
“Is that stealing?”
“Some courts found parts criminal. Other parts were treated as improper loans.”
Adult answer.
Matthew looked at the therapist.
“Why can’t grown-ups say yes or no?”
Because life.
Arthur tried again.
“I took risks with money that was supposed to be protected for you.”
Better.
“Why?”
“To keep the company growing.”
“Did it work?”
“Sometimes.”
“Was it worth jail?”
Arthur almost laughed.
“No.”
The session ended.
Matthew requested another months later.
Their relationship remained cautious.
Arthur never regained patriarch status.
He became Grandpa Arthur.
One older man.
May you like
One relationship.
No throne.
