Chapter 23 - VICTORIA’S APOLOGY

Victoria changed slower than Arthur.

She believed dignity required never admitting humiliation.

Then age softened something.

At eighty-two, she asked to see me.

We met in her condominium.

No lawyers.

Still public enough—building lounge.

She wore pearls.

Of course.

“I should have fed Matthew.”

“Yes.”

“I thought you would cave.”

“Yes.”

“I wanted you to sign.”

“Yes.”

“I thought Nathan had made you arrogant.”

I almost laughed.

“He gave me paperwork.”

“That can make people arrogant.”

Fair.

She looked down.

“I hated that you became the person with the power to challenge Arthur.”

“Why?”

“Because I spent forty years helping him build the life Nathan tried to regulate.”

“He tried to protect Matthew.”

“I know now.”

Then:

“I also knew then, somewhere.”

That was more honest.

She apologized for the dinner.

For the reserve transfers.

For letting family hierarchy become moral hierarchy.

I did not say everything was forgiven.

I said:

“I believe you.”

That was enough.

Matthew later chose to meet her.

They discussed almost none of it.

She taught him gin rummy.

He cheated badly.

She pretended not to notice.

Relationships can become smaller and safer.
