Chapter 26 - THE LAST HEARING
At the final trust hearing, Judge Rebecca Sloan asked whether I wanted additional restrictions preventing Ashley’s branch from receiving extraordinary needs-based support.
“No.”
Ashley looked at me.
The judge asked:
“Why not?”
“Because the problem wasn’t that Emma received help.”
I glanced toward my sister.
“The problem was that adults decided she could receive it by taking from someone else without consent.”
The judge nodded.
Dad cried.
Mom stared at her hands.
The court approved the governance reforms.
George permanently removed from trustee authority.
Diane barred from certification roles.
Ashley barred from serving as family fiduciary for a fixed period and subject to independent review thereafter.
My branch restored.
Emma’s protected.
Noah’s protected.
Nobody won someone else’s money.
That felt right.
Afterward, Dad stopped me outside.
“Rachel.”
I turned.
“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
“I thought you were stronger.”
I almost laughed.
“That was the problem.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
Then:
“Do you forgive me?”
“No.”
His face fell.
“Not yet.”
That was different.
