Chapter 5 - THE LAND TRUST

My grandfather Samuel Dawson died two years earlier.

He owned forty-three acres outside Portland.

Old nursery land.

Development pressure had pushed value up dramatically.

He put it into the Dawson Family Land Trust.

Beneficiaries:

My father Richard.

Then his descendants.

The land could not be sold until a specific review date unless supermajority approval.

That date was approaching.

And Ethan?

Grandfather’s amendment created child beneficiary subshares when each great-grandchild turned ten.

Ethan would turn ten in forty-eight days.

Projected beneficial share:

Around $4.3 million if the land sold at current appraisal.

Not cash.

Interest.

Future value.

I had known there was a trust.

Not the number.

Tyler knew both.
