Chapter 26 - LEO BECOMES A FATHER
Leo became a father at thirty-four.
A daughter.
Sophie.
He cried more than his wife, Anna.
I visited the hospital after asking.
Always asking.
Anna looked exhausted.
Sophie slept.
Leo handed me his daughter.
“Mom.”
“Yes?”
“Do not check her bank account.”
I laughed so loudly a nurse looked in.
“Terrible.”
“Too soon?”
“Thirty years late.”
Anna asked for food.
Leo ordered everything.
Soup.
Sandwich.
Fruit.
Cookies.
Then stopped.
“Is this weird?”
I knew what he meant.
“No.”
He looked at Anna.
“What do you actually want?”
“Burger.”
He changed the order.
No family rules.
No medical-money mythology.
Sophie was healthy.
No trust created from injury.
No settlement.
Just an ordinary college fund Leo and Anna built slowly.
He told me:
“I like this kind of money better.”
I understood.
Money earned.
Saved.
Planned.
No trauma attached.
Still, he did not reject his own trust.
It had paid for the care he needed.
