Chapter 22 - EVELYN’S RELEASE
Evelyn was released in old age after serving her sentence and qualifying under ordinary supervised-release rules.
No family influence changed the criteria.
She moved into assisted living.
No financial authority.
No BrightPath.
No Bennett Crest office.
No direct Leo contact unless he consented.
He was twenty-one.
He said no.
At twenty-four:
“Maybe one meeting.”
Therapeutic.
Neutral.
I did not attend.
David waited elsewhere.
Leo told me later.
First question:
“Why did you slap me?”
Evelyn answered:
“Because I was angry and believed I had the right to control the table.”
“Because cake?”
“No.”
“Because money?”
“Money made me think everything around you was mine to manage.”
Leo nodded.
“Did you think my medical money was yours?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I helped manage the lawsuit and the trust after you were sick. I confused work with ownership.”
“Did you know I was hungry?”
“Yes.”
“Why not feed me?”
Evelyn cried.
“Because withholding things became how I proved I was in charge.”
Leo stayed silent.
Then:
“That’s worse than being mad about cake.”
“Yes.”
No hug.
No forgiveness.
One meeting.
Enough.
Evelyn requested another later.
