Chapter 24 - EVELYN’S DEATH

Evelyn died at eighty-three after heart failure.
No mystery.
No secret poisoning.
No dramatic last confession.
She had lived seven years after release.
David visited.
Brenda visited.
Leo did not after the one meeting.
He received notice.
“Do you want to go?”
He thought.
“No.”
Fine.
Evelyn’s estate paid remaining restitution obligations first.
Then lawful distributions.
She left Leo a silver cake server.
I stared at the executor’s letter.
Of course.
Leo laughed when I told him.
“Keep?”
“Your choice.”
He sold it.
Used the money to buy camping equipment.
Objects become ordinary when people stop forcing meaning onto them.
Brenda kept Evelyn’s pearls.
David kept their father’s watch.
No argument.
At the funeral, I did not attend.

My relationship with Evelyn had ended years earlier.
Death did not require reopening it.
