Chapter 21 - BRENDA’S SECOND WEDDING
Brenda and Mark stayed married.
But at their tenth anniversary, she insisted on renewing vows privately.
Not because the first wedding was invalid.
Because she hated that its scale had become inseparable from Leo’s trust.
Mark asked:
“Why do we need another ceremony?”
“I want one we paid for ourselves.”
They held it in their backyard.
Twenty people.
Food trucks.
Paper flowers made by their children.
Leo was fourteen.
He attended.
Brenda asked him before ordering dessert:
“Chocolate or vanilla?”
“Both.”
“Greedy.”
He smiled.
“Medical trust.”
Everyone froze.
Then Leo laughed.
Dark family humor had finally become possible because the power behind it was gone.
Brenda paid for the entire event from her salary.
Mark paid half.
No family office.
No Bennett Crest credit.
They kept the original wedding photographs.
Did not pretend it never happened.
