Chapter 7 - EUGENIA’S VERSION

My mother requested a formal interview through counsel before the trust hearing.

No Camille.

No direct contact.

I attended with Lydia.

Eugenia looked composed.

No pearls this time.

She began:

“I made a terrible decision with the garden room.”

Good.

Not enough.

“Why nine days?”

“Because you were traveling nine days.”

“Why did my travel matter?”

“I wanted Camille removed from the household conflict until you returned.”

“Locked.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she would have left the room and continued interfering.”

There.

No accidental restraint.

Then:

“Did you intend to keep her there all nine days?”

My mother’s attorney shifted.

Eugenia answered anyway.

“I intended to decide based on her behavior.”

Worse.

“Would staff have released her?”

“When I instructed.”

There.

Control.

Then pregnancy.

“Did you know the Continuity Review was in nine days?”

“Yes.”

“Did you want Camille absent for it?”

“I wanted the family office to proceed without theatrics.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“Yes.”

There.

Then why?

My mother sat straighter.

“When your father died, I spent seven years protecting his structure while you acted as though the company was the only thing that mattered. I handled the trusts, the residence, the family distributions, the relatives who threatened lawsuits every Christmas. Then you marry a thirty-year-old woman, she becomes pregnant, and suddenly one bureaucratic notice says half my stewardship moves to outsiders.”

“Temporary stewardship.”

Her face hardened.

“Do not quote Lydia at me.”

Lydia did not react.

Then:

“Did you believe the baby would own seventeen percent?”

“No.”

Good.

“Did you believe Camille would?”

“No.”

“Did you believe I would?”

“No.”

“So what were you losing?”

“Authority.”

Finally.

The clean word.

Then Carillon.

“Your heritage contract?”

“Yes, I wanted it approved.”

“Why?”

“Because Morello Heritage Services built the identity Wexler is buying.”

“Five-point-four million?”

“The brand value is larger.”

“Independent review could establish that.”

“Independent review always cuts family compensation first because outsiders think family work is decorative.”

There.

Not entirely irrational historically.

Still conflict.

Then the event-property lease.

“It was negotiated.”

“Above market?”

“Premium property.”

“Review will decide.”

She looked away.

Then my bonus.

“You’re being reviewed too.”

“Yes.”

“Will you repay if overpriced?”

“Yes.”

She laughed bitterly.

“You enjoy pretending money doesn’t matter because you have more than anyone.”

Fair point.

Then she turned to something deeper.

“Camille has spent a year teaching you that everything before her is toxic.”

I nearly answered.

Then waited.

“Has she?”

“She mocks family meetings.”

Camille once called them “expensive Thanksgiving with lawyers.”

Accurate.

“She refused the heirloom baptism planning.”

We had no baby yet and Camille was not Catholic.

“She refused to let me choose the nursery.”

Also her right.

“She questioned why your child needs Morello security.”

Reasonable question.

Eugenia interpreted autonomy as dismantling.

Then I asked:

“Did you hate her?”

“No.”

“Did you want her gone?”

“Temporarily.”

“Locked.”

Her face changed.

“Yes.”

No one could move past that word.

Then the final question.

“If the pregnancy hold had activated while Camille was in that room, what would you have done?”

Eugenia was silent.

“I hoped to challenge the verification.”

“On what basis?”

“Household separation. Lack of participation. Uncertainty about whether the marriage would continue.”

Lydia spoke for the first time.

“The trust does not condition preservation on marital harmony.”

Eugenia looked at her.

“I know that now.”

Did she know then?

That became contested.

Documents suggested she had been warned.

Then she said:

“I believed I could get enough delay to close Carillon.”

There.

Not permanently steal seventeen percent.

Delay nine days.

Close a transaction.

Preserve fee.

Preserve influence.

Then everything could “normalize.”

That is how families justify coercion.

Only until closing.

Only until he returns.

Only until you sign.

Only until the crisis passes.

May you like

The crisis becomes permission.

The damage stays.
