Chapter 21 - THE GARDEN ROOM

Morello House underwent a life-safety renovation.
The garden room remained.
Camille had no interest in destroying it.
I asked once:
“Greenhouse?”
“It already is a garden room.”
Right.
The exterior padlock hardware was removed.
Interior emergency release installed.
Windows replaced.
The cot gone.
Supplies gone.
The room became a working conservatory with herbs, citrus trees, and a long table used by the estate’s horticulture staff.
No memorial plaque.
No preserved damage.
Then Sofia was three.
We visited the estate for a cousin’s afternoon gathering.
Camille agreed.
Eugenia did not live there anymore but attended separately under family boundaries.
Sofia ran through the courtyard.
Camille froze when she moved toward the garden room.
I reached for Sofia.
Camille stopped me.
“No.”
I looked.
“She’s fine.”
Sofia opened the door.
Walked inside.
Touched a lemon tree.
“Yellow!”
That was all.
Camille stood at the threshold.
Breathing.
Then entered.
I stayed outside until she looked back.
“Are you coming?”
“Yes.”
Permission.
I went in.
Sofia ran around the table.
No padlock.
No story assigned to her.
Then Eugenia appeared in the courtyard.
She stopped when she saw Camille inside.
Did not approach.
Camille noticed.
After a minute, she said:
“She can come in if she asks.”
Eugenia heard.
“May I?”
Camille took time.
“Yes.”
My mother entered.
No speeches.
Sofia handed her a fallen leaf.
Eugenia accepted.
Then Sofia tried to close the door.
Camille’s face changed.
“Leave it open, sweetheart.”
“Why?”
“Mommy wants it open.”
Sofia shrugged.
Left it open.

No explanation.
