Chapter 26 - THE DOOR WITHOUT A LOCK

Eugenia turned eighty.

Camille organized nothing.

Important.

My sister handled the lunch.

Professional event staff.

Small gathering.

Eugenia now walked with a cane and wore the same kind of pearls she had worn the day of the garden room.

Sofia was fifteen.

Tall.

Opinionated.

Unimpressed by family lore.

After lunch she asked Eugenia whether she wanted to see the estate greenhouse.

They went.

Camille and I followed later.

The old garden room smelled of lemon leaves and damp soil.

No lock.

No cot.

No bottled-water stockpile.

A horticulture intern was repotting herbs.

Eugenia stood near the doorway.

Then said to Camille:

“I still think about this place.”

“So do I.”

“I am sorry.”

“I know.”

No dramatic new apology needed.

Then Eugenia said:

“I used to think the worst consequence was losing authority.”

Camille looked at her.

“What was?”

“Knowing that for years you checked whether doors opened from the inside.”

Camille did not deny it.

Then:

“That part is mostly gone.”

Eugenia nodded.

“Good.”

No request to be thanked.

Then Sofia closed the greenhouse door because the air conditioning outside was running.

Camille’s shoulders tightened for a second.

Sofia noticed.

“Mom?”

“Open it a little.”

Sofia immediately did.

No question.

Then Camille said:

“Actually, close it.”

Sofia stared.

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

The door closed.

No padlock.

Camille opened it herself ten seconds later.

Then laughed.

Not symbolic performance planned by anyone.

Just a nervous system learning present tense.

Eugenia watched.

Said nothing.

Good.

Later that afternoon Sofia asked if Eugenia could come stay at our house for one night after a medical appointment.

Camille looked at me.

Then Eugenia.

Then:

“Yes.”

My mother almost cried.

Camille added:

“Guest room. One night. No reorganizing anything.”

Eugenia laughed.

“I’m eighty. I no longer organize my own purse.”

The overnight happened.

No incident.

At breakfast Eugenia tried to tell Sofia she needed more protein.

Camille raised an eyebrow.

Eugenia immediately said:

May you like

“Not my business.”

Progress has comic timing.
