Chapter 20 - GRANDMOTHER WITHOUT AUTHORITY

Eugenia completed custody and entered probation.
Sofia was four months old.
My mother requested a photograph.
Camille said yes.
One.
Then a video.
No live visit.
Eugenia accepted.
Six months later she asked for a therapeutic meeting with Camille before any contact with Sofia.
Good.
Camille agreed only because she wanted answers.
Neutral office.
No baby.
I did not attend.
Afterward Camille told me what happened.
Eugenia said:
“I thought being Sebastian’s mother gave me responsibility to keep the family stable.”
Camille answered:
“You thought responsibility meant authority over my body.”
“Yes.”
Specific.
Then:
“I told myself the room was comfortable enough.”
“It was locked.”
“Yes.”
“You planned nine days.”
“Yes.”
“You planned to lie to Sebastian.”
“Yes.”
No minimizing.
Then Camille asked:
“Did you want my pregnancy to fail?”
Eugenia looked horrified.
“No.”
Camille believed that.
So did I.
No need to invent murder intent.
Then:
“Did you understand confinement could harm me?”
“I refused to think about it.”
That answer was more believable than pretending she never knew.
Then Eugenia apologized for calling Camille disobedient.
For trying to control household status.
For using Sebastian’s travel.
For placing Carillon above her freedom.
No hug.
No forgiveness request.
At the end:
“Can I someday meet Sofia?”
Camille said:
“Maybe.”
Eugenia answered:
“Thank you.”
Not:
She is my granddaughter.
Not:
I have rights.
Progress.
Then three months later, after therapist review, Eugenia met Sofia for twenty minutes.
Supervised.
Neutral family center.
Sofia was thirteen months.
She did not know any of this.
Eugenia entered with no gift.
Good.
Sofia stared.
Then tried to eat a block.
Eugenia laughed.
She did not reach until Sofia reached first.
Then held her for perhaps thirty seconds before Sofia wanted down.
Eugenia gave her back immediately.
That action mattered more than any apology.

A child said enough with her body.
Grandmother obeyed.
