Chapter 25 - THE FAMILY COUNCIL

The Morello family eventually abolished the title Household Steward.
No need.
Residence administration became professional.
Family members had preferences.
No hierarchy title.
Then protected governance review.
The thirty-four-percent block was too large for a company now owned partly by institutional investors and employee vehicles.
Independent advisers proposed reducing it to twenty-two percent.
Eleven for founder/legacy safeguards.
Eleven for descendant/continuity safeguards.
Additional protected authority moved to:
Employee pension fiduciaries.
Independent audit trustees.
Legacy property committee.
No family individual.
Sofia was eleven.
She did not vote.
Her branch fiduciaries reviewed.
Camille consulted on child-related structure.
I consulted where conflict-free.
Eugenia had no formal role.
She submitted a comment anyway.
Old habits.
Her comment supported reform.
That surprised everyone.
She wrote:
No family member should feel irreplaceable because a trust gives temporary responsibility.
Good.
Then company governance changed.
No family executive bonuses without independent benchmark.
No family side contract above threshold without public-to-board conflict disclosure.
No household data in business governance.
No pregnancy medical data beyond minimum needed for trust administration.
Privacy.
Important.
Then I stepped down as CEO at sixty-two.
Years had passed.
Professional successor.
I remained chair two years.
Then left.
Sofia asked:
“Are you fired?”
“No.”
“Retired?”
“Mostly.”
“Grandma said you’ll hate it.”
Eugenia knew me.
I did.
Then Camille returned to design consulting she had practiced before pregnancy.
Not empire.
Not revenge career.
Work she liked.
We had remained married.
Not because trauma magically strengthened us.
We spent years fixing patterns.
Separate accounts.
Clear household boundaries.
Travel calendars.
Direct communication.
Therapy when needed.
No mother managing marriage.
No husband using security as argument.
No wife proving loyalty through trust paperwork.
Ordinary work.
Then someone asked at a family dinner:
“Who runs the Morellos now?”
Sofia, fourteen, answered:
“Apparently committees.”
May you like
Everyone laughed.
Best possible outcome.
