Chapter 21 - DR. CRANE’S HEARING
Dr. Crane faced a medical-board review.
Not because he abused Florence.
Because investigators questioned whether he adequately verified caregiver reports before documenting probable neurocognitive decline and prescribing sedatives.
He testified.
“I relied too heavily on collateral history from Mrs. Gwendolyn Weaver.”
“Did you have reason to suspect conflict?”
“In hindsight, yes.”
“Then?”
“She presented as attentive spouse-caregiver.”
“She was not spouse to Florence.”
“Correct.”
His terminology itself revealed the blur.
Gwendolyn had become the person speaking for everyone.
The board issued a reprimand and required continuing education in elder-capacity assessment, medication-risk review, and financial-conflict screening.
No license revocation.
His care errors contributed.
They did not equal intentional abuse.
Florence received a written apology.
She replied:
“Read your patients before their relatives.”
I told her that was unfairly concise.
