Chapter 18 - THE DIVORCE

Our divorce took eleven months.

No children.

That simplified some things.

Not grief.

Gwendolyn’s business was nearly insolvent.

Her debt remained largely hers where legally separate.

Joint assets were divided under state law.

I did not ask to strip her of everything.

I did protect company ownership as separate inherited property under our prenup.

She challenged some appreciation claims.

We settled.

She received a lawful share of marital assets.

Some people around me were furious.

“She tried to steal from your grandmother.”

Law is not revenge accounting.

Property division answered marriage law.

Restitution answered crime.

Different systems.

Our house sold.

I could not stay in the room where Florence had been abused.

Maybe later I would regret letting place become contaminated.

At that moment, selling was my choice.

I bought a smaller townhouse.

Florence refused to move in.

“Never again.”

Fair.

We lived twenty minutes apart.

Closer than before abuse.

More independent than during caregiving.

Better.
