Chapter 12 - GWENDOLYN’S DEFENSE

Gwendolyn’s lawyer built a case around caregiver burnout.

Some of it was real.

Florence could be stubborn.

She sometimes refused medication.

She became angry when Gwendolyn touched mail.

She once threw a glass against a wall during an argument.

I had not known.

The defense argued:

Gwendolyn faced escalating stress.

Lucas was absent.

Florence became verbally abusive.

The cleaner incident was an impulsive breakdown.

Medication confusion came from managing multiple prescriptions.

Property involvement came from legitimate efforts to resolve household finances.

No plan to exploit.

Then the documents.

Mail forwarding.

Success fee.

POA draft.

Pill video.

Conservatorship coordination.

The defense did not disappear.

It narrowed.

Maybe Gwendolyn did not intentionally sedate Florence to fake incapacity.

Maybe some medication mistakes were mistakes.

Maybe Dr. Crane’s notes reflected genuine impairment.

Maybe the consulting fee was for legitimate community outreach.

The prosecution had to prove each charge separately.

Good.

I did not want exaggerated justice.

I wanted accurate justice.

Gwendolyn requested to speak to me through attorneys.

I refused.

Then accepted one written letter.

Lucas,

I know you think I became someone else.

I didn’t.

That opening chilled me.

She explained feeling humiliated by Florence.

Judged.

Poor.

Inferior.

Florence controlled money while watching her drown in debt.

“She loved you, not us.”

She wrote that the lake should have been mine.

She believed George’s community trust was “one last punishment” against Dad.

Then:

I never intended to hurt Florence badly.

The phrase made me put the letter down.

Badly.

Not:

I never intended harm.

Later:

The water was filthy, but I knew the cleaner was diluted. I wanted her to tell me where the folder was.

Admission.

Not legal confession automatically; her attorney had approved the letter carefully.

Then:

I changed medication because she was impossible before appointments.

There.

Potentially devastating.

Her lawyer later argued she meant she adjusted doses within prescribed range.

But Florence’s sedative was not scheduled that way.

Medical evidence would matter.

The final sentence:

I did everything because you were too loyal to her to see what she took from you.

That was the center of Gwendolyn’s self-deception.

She thought my love for Florence made me weak.

May you like

She never considered that Florence did not owe me Lake Arden.

I filed for divorce the next morning.
