Torin became better slowly.
That was the only kind of better I trusted.
He learned to read every document.

At Iris’s kindergarten registration, he spent twenty minutes reviewing a field-trip waiver.
I texted:
You created this monster.
He replied:
Fair.
He never missed support payments.
Never used gifts to compete with me.
Never told Iris adult financial details too early.
Never brought Delphine near her secretly.
At seven, Iris wanted to know why Dad and Mom divorced.
Torin answered with me present.
“I failed to protect Mom when Grandma was hurting and pressuring her.”
Iris asked:
“Did you hurt Mom?”
“I didn’t hit or grab her.”
“Then?”
“I helped Grandma put pressure on her and I didn’t stop Grandma fast enough.”
“Why?”
“I was scared of losing money, work, and Grandma’s approval.”
Iris stared.
“Mom more important.”
Torin’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
“Me too.”
“Yes.”
“Then why?”
He answered honestly.
“Because knowing what is important and acting like it is important are not always the same thing.”
That was a good answer.
Iris hugged him.
Not forgiveness ceremony.
